Dealing with Handicapped Children and/or adults

It’s the long weekend so dealing with handicapped children and/or adults becomes increasing difficult.  These are some suggestions so that you (the caregiver) can get rested:

  1. make certain you have staff on hand for the long weekend and substitutes in case the help does not arrive.
  2. plan meals ahead so there is plenty of food prepared.
  3. plan some reasonable activities which have a limited time frame such as an hour or two.
  4. be careful about overstimulating the children.
  5. make sure snacks do not accentuate the problem ie ADHD
  6. do not serve chips , cornflakes which can be spread through out the house creating a cleaning night mare
  7. use this opportunity to teach the kids how to talk about movies etc. Who is the playwright? How does this production compare to others? What does the music have on the delivery of the message?
  8. if possible clean the house so that you (caregiver) can have some downtime.
  9. make some special time for your pet.  Discuss all the benefits of having a pet? Discuss the well-being of your pet.
  10. take time to have fun and enjoy each other as a family, be it a single parent family.
